In newspapers and announcements we often make use of abbreviations. Of frequent occurrences are the following:

  • 2 after a word or part of a word to indicate reduplication. E.g.: bunga2 besides bunga-bunga = flowers; ber-main2 besides bermain-main = to play; ber-lari2an besides berlari-larian = to run about.
  • a.l. for antara lain = among others
  • a.n. for atas nama = on behalf of
  • dgn or dg for dengan = with
  • dll for dan lain-lain = etc. etc.
  • dsb for dan sebagainya = etc. etc.
  • y.a.d. for yang akan datang = next (the future)
  • y.l. for yang lalu = past
  • yg for yang = which, that (relative pronouns)
